When rugby turned professional in the mid-1990s Harlequin FC followed suit, which led to the birth of the Harlequin Amateurs. Since then they have strived to provide a sociable and welcoming atmosphere for players of all ages and abilities.
The Harlequin Amateurs run a number of successful teams; from those discovering rugby at Under 5s, through to the oldest youth team in the Under 17s, all the way on to the senior sides. There is also a Veterans team for those who don’t ever want to give up. Their mantra? You don’t stop playing rugby because you are too old; you get old because you stop playing rugby!
The Amateurs are fortunate to enjoy a fantastic relationship with St Mary’s University. The Under 5s and Under 6s train indoors each week in the tennis hall at Waldegrave Rd and the Under 7s-Under 11s train and play at the Broom Road pitches, opposite Teddington Studios. The youth teams train and play at St Mary’s Waldegrave Rd Campus alongside the First, Second and Vets teams.
St Mary’s University not only give the mini and youth programmes access to their incredible facilities, but they also provide specialised rugby coaching. This coaching comes from within their student community, which is an excellent opportunity for the children to learn rugby from those actually training, playing and coaching in the game.
The Amateurs are actively recruiting and would be pleased to welcome any players from youth though to the senior levels.
