Harlequins Ladies and Girls Rugby

Harlequins Ladies and Girls Rugby

In August 2017, Harlequins formally launched it women and girls programme. In doing so, the Club reaffirmed its commitment to growing and developing the women’s game by creating a pathway from grassroots to elite international rugby.

Girls can be introduced to the game through the Harlequins Foundation’s Switch programme and can then become more formally affiliated with the sport through the Harlequin Amateurs girls’ section.

Developing through minis, junior and teenage rugby, the option to play at a social or elite adult level is available through the Harlequins Ladies third, second and first teams.

The Harlequins first and second teams compete in the RFU’s elite structures, while the third team compete within the National Challenge 1 SE West League.

In October 2016, the Harlequins Foundation launched Switch – a multi-tiered programme aimed at encouraging girls to get involved in the sport by:

- Increasing accessibility and participation – providing opportunities for girls to take part in rugby within their curriculum PE lessons, after school clubs and festivals.
- Inspiring and Exceling – using our coaches to nurture and develop girls progression within the game.
- Developing and Sustaining – educating staff, supporting schools, and providing an onward pathway.

Switch is in its second year of delivery. Last year the programme delivered rugby sessions to 600 girls and transitioned 33 new players to Harlequin Amateurs.

This year the Switch programme will deliver to 1000 young girls in the boroughs of Richmond and Twickenham. A series of festivals and club transition events across the year will further strengthen an already inspiring programme.
