Quins grind out an attritional victory against Bristol Bears on Saturday afternoon at Surrey Sports Park by 14 points to 5
Tries from Vice-Captain Fiona Fletcher and Hooker Lauren Brooks, a perfect display from the tee from Fullback Bobbie Haywood and a sound defensive performance was enough to give the home side the win at a windy SSP.
This is the squad’s second consecutive victory since the heavy loss to Wasps two weeks ago and has firmly put the side back into contention in the Tyrrells Development League.
It was Fletcher that opened her side’s account on the 9-minute mark. Haywood stepped up to slot home the conversion to give her side an early 7-point lead.
Less than 20 minutes later, Hooker Brooks crossed the whitewash for a second with Haywood again adding the extras to make the score 14-0. With 27 minutes on the clock, the hosts looked firmly in control.
Bristol, however, managed to strike back just before the break thanks to a try from Flanker Daisie Mayes. With the conversion missed, the score stood at 14-5 to Quins.
Just before the break, Quins second row Courtney Dobson was sent to the Sin Bin for foul play, meaning her side began the second half with a player down. The Bears threw wave after wave of attack against the hosts, but Quins’ tenacity in defence kept the away side at bay.
When back to a full compliment of players, the home side returned the favour, but the Bristol defence was equally resolute. Such was the quality of both defensive units, the second half ended scoreless, with the final score remaining 14-5 to Quins.
The Harlequins Development XV are back in action away at Gloucester Hartpury on Saturday 16th March (kick-off: TBC).
