Harlequins is hugely excited to announce that the team will play Leicester Tigers in Big Game 12 at Twickenham Stadium in Round 7 of the 2019/20 Gallagher Premiership on Saturday 28th December (kick-off: 16:30, live on BT Sport)
Following their hard-fought victory over Wasps last year, in front of a capacity crowd at the Home of English Rugby, Quins will again make their customary journey over the A316 at the end of December for Big Game 12, the sporting event of the festive calendar.
In a delightful turn of symmetry, the 2019/20 edition of this famous fixture is a re-run of the original match played in 2008 – a thriller where Quins came from behind to secure a draw in the dying minutes of the contest. This was thanks to a try from England and British and Irish Lions winger Ugo Monye and a steely conversion from Premiership Rugby Hall of Famer and current Skills and Off the Ball Coach Nick Evans.
Since then, the two sides have enjoyed numerous thrilling encounters - including their match in Round 21 of last season’s Gallagher Premiership, played under the Friday Night Lights of The Stoop.
Harlequins Head of Rugby Paul Gustard commented: “Big Game is one of the greatest events in English club rugby and has proved to be an exemplar to other teams in our domestic game. I had the honour of coaching at one for the first-time last season, and it was one of the highlights of the year for the entire club.
"It is a magnificent occasion for our players which excites, enthrals and challenges them in equal measure. We want them to experience memories that last a lifetime and spectacles such as this are ones that will echo through the years.
“Leicester Tigers are one of the most prestigious clubs in the world and one that has enjoyed a great deal of success on the biggest stage in the last two decades. I was privileged to start my professional playing career at the Tigers, and not only do I have unbelievably fond memories of the Club and the people there, I also used to live with "Geordie the Pencil" (Geordan Murphy) so it will be special for me personally to go up against them in a contest of this calibre.
“It is of course the supporters, however, who really make Big Game special with their singing and their enormous vocal presence and I cannot wait to hear them bring the home of English rugby to life once again.”
Since its beginnings, the Big Game series at Twickenham Stadium has rapidly grown in popularity and is now a firm fixture in the festive sporting calendar. The occasion prides itself on being a day out for all the family as the worlds of rugby and entertainment combine with spectacular musical performances and jaw-dropping pyrotechnics.
Over the years, Scouting for Girls, EXTREME Sports, Olly Murs, Rudimental, Sam Bailey and Lawson have all performed at Big Game, with television personalities such as Mark Wright and Vernon Kay both having MC’d the event.
Tickets for Big Game 12 will go on general sale within the next month however the best way of securing your seat at Rugby HQ for this iconic fixture is by purchasing a Harlequins membership which guarantees attendance to all regular season home matches, including all Tyrrells Premier 15s encounters in 2018/19.
