Harlequins Ladies Co Head Coaches Karen Findlay and Gary Street rally the troops before their Tyrrells Premier 15s Semi Final against Loughborough Lightning at The Stoop tomorrow (kick-off: 14:00)
On Saturday 30th March, we achieved something truly immense as we issued just under 5,000 tickets for our victory over Gloucester Hartpury in the final regular season match of the season. Overall, we scored nine tries but, more importantly, did not concede a single point which, against a side of the calibre of Gloucester, is a fantastic achievement, and one which has given us real momentum.
On top of the outstanding rugby on show, with over ten elite internationals taking to the field for both sides, we were honoured to host inspiring matchday activations from various branches of the Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade, British Rowing, England Hockey, and London Pulse Netball. It truly was a festival of women’s sport with over 300 young girls taking part in a festival of rugby before having the chance to watch the senior match, and it was an honour to play such a central part in it. But, as is always the case with competition of this level we have had to park that success immediately and focus on our next challenge: the playoffs.
The squad has worked exceptionally hard on the training paddock, and that’s been translated into performances throughout the season. They have played some outstanding attacking rugby and have displayed a ruthlessness in defence; they have been resilient and defiant at challenging points of the campaign and have been equally united in victory. They back each other up and what we stand for as a Club. We know, however, that there is more to come, and that they have another level to go up to in terms of performance.
Reaching this key stage of the competition has required a tremendous effort by the whole team, both on and off the field. We are fortunate to have a squad which is filled with international talent and experience, many of whom have lit up the world stage with their performances in the recent Women’s Six Nations. As important is the strength in depth from our ranks of consistently high achieving squad players who have driven our energy throughout the season. It’s that blend that drives competition, and the combination of the two has been instrumental in our success so far this season and we know they will go ‘as one’.
To do that, however, we need you. We’re building something incredible here at The Club; something that really is changing the game; altering the sporting landscape and you, our loyal supporters are at the heart of that. The atmosphere that you created at The Game Changer was the best that we had ever felt in our 20 years in the sport and it inspired us to go out and be the best that we can be – we need that from you again.
So, as you have done every time we have graced this hallowed turf here at The Stoop, get behind the team and let’s hear The Stoop Roar! Let’s attack this moment with all our might. Be the 16th player and drive us over the line.
Come all without, Come all within. You’ve not seen nothing like the mighty Quins!
